The Colossal Cinematic Showcase will host their 15th Showcase of local short films at
the Overland Park Cinemas (7051 W Overland Rd, Boise, ID 83709) on Sunday, May 4, 2025 at 4pm. Our

photographer will be on hand to photograph attendees as they strut the red-carpet. At 4:30pm, lights

will go down in the theater as the featured short films begin to light up the big screen. Witness the

variety of talent the Treasure Valley film community has to offer through two hours of narratives,

documentaries, and music videos. Directly following the films, head to Mad Swede Brewing Company

(2772 S Cole Rd #140, Boise, ID 83709) for the Colossal After Party and an opportunity to meet and

mingle with the featured filmmakers of the Showcase. This event is open to the public, for mature

audiences only. Tickets to experience this Colossal event are available for purchase online at

    .
Born from a belief that movie makers should have an opportunity to show their films on the big

screen to their friends, family, cast members, crew and the public, the Colossal Cinematic Showcase was

developed by Melina Marx and Larry Dennis. The Colossal Cinematic Showcase, currently one of the

longest running film exhibitions in Idaho, exists to provide a showcase for filmmakers to screen their

works of art. Melina Marx has been performing and producing theater and movies for over 20 years. In

addition to being Executive Producer of Colossal Cinematic Showcase, she has produced, teched, and

acted in over 20 short movies and music videos. Larry Dennis has been directing and producing theater

and movies for over 30 years. In addition to being Program Director of Colossal Cinematic Showcase, he

has directed 57 full length stage plays and made over 50 short movies and music videos. Together they

have teamed up to provide an avenue for short films to be screened and experienced by an audience.

The intent behind the CCS is to provide a showcase to show local short films (which otherwise

may not be shown on the big screen) and celebrate them equally, to create a culture and environment

where there is no sense of competition between filmmakers or films. The CCS is an event to bring the

film community together to celebrate their work with friends and family, cast and crew, and the public

    of Boise.

Being short filmmakers themselves, Melina and Larry realized most short films produced locally
are low-budget to no-budget projects, so often the cast and crew of the film are volunteering their time

and talent. Then the question arose of what happens to the film once completed. While uploading the

film to a streaming service online is a common practice, the filmmaker loses that instant audience

interaction to their film. With streaming, at least the cast and crew are able to see and share their craft

digitally – yet they too lose that instant audience reaction. The realization that fiscally it does not pencil

to rent a space to show a single short film, sparked the idea of renting a movie theatre and showcasing

multiple short films by local filmmakers at one time would benefit the local film community.

After founding the Colossal Cinematic Showcase, submissions were requested from “local”

filmmakers – meaning filmmakers from the Treasure Valley or Idaho, or at least filmmakers having some

tie to Idaho. The first showcase was a great success, with 12 short films and music videos providing the

content for a two-hour showcase. Since then, each showcase has featured films from 2 minutes to 20

minutes in length, with an emphasis to show films from local filmmakers. The May 4
    th Colossal Cinematic
Showcase will feature 12 short films, 10 from Idaho filmmakers, 1 regional film, and 1 national film.

The Colossal Cinematic Showcase provides not only an opportunity for such films to be seen in a

movie theatre, but turns the viewing into an experience by allowing attendees to be photographed

while walking a red carpet, and to gather at the Colossal After Party directly following the films, to meet

and mingle with the featured filmmakers and others associated with the films. The CCS has typically

been held twice within a calendar year, historically in May and November, since November 2016.
