Mat Kearney 2022

It was a snowy day in May, and we were so glad Mat Kearney and crew could make it to our Blue Moon Listener Lounge for a session today! This may have been the 4th or 5th visit we’ve had over the years from Mat, and it’s always such a pleasure to have him in. They play Boise before heading off to Spokane. Their crew was talking to one of our techs who is about to tour in an indie band, and they warned him, “Don’t play Salt Lake City on a Sunday, it’ll be band practice.” We’re so glad Mat’s 6-week tour brings him through Boise.

Mat’s newest album is “January Flower.” He says the title reminds him of his daughter, and a flower being born in a time of year when it’s not supposed to. Mat has more family now, and he says that touring is different now. He said it’s “More complex in a beautiful way.” He misses them when they can’t tour, but doesn’t miss singing “Baby Shark.” Here’s another song to listen to, to get that one out of your head.

At one point, Mat took his best friend from Eugene camping. They rented a house, lost power during the 2nd biggest rainfall ever recorded there, sat by a fire, and wrote songs.

Much thanks to Mat and Jason for playing a session for us. We had a few Treefort sessions, Arlo Parks at Record Exchange, but our only other on-site session has been Eilen Jewell. We’re hoping to catch up on sessions a bit this year, but everything is still a bit up in the air regarding Covid.

Tomorrow I’ll be mixing an X Session for the band Dorothy, which should be fun. Our next River session looks to be Lo Moon, June 23rd.

The first weekend in June, I’m returning with a media pass to cover the NAMM Show in L.A.! Last time I went, I got to meet and see workshops from amazing producers like Billy Eilish’s bro Finneas, Jack Antonoff, and Bob Clearmountain. They had a great workshop for female sound engineers. I was able to grab red carpet photos of Linda Perry, Cherie Curie, Gloria Gaynor, Lizzy Hale and many others. Just feet away, I watched Joni Mitchell get a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Tech Awards. I booked the show before I realized I’ll miss the She Rocks Awards this year, the day before I arrive. I hope to get some great photos of gear, engineers, and workshops. If you like any aspect of live or recorded music, it’s a really amazing weekend of hands-on demos, workshops, and entertainment. Music at NAMM is EVERYWHERE!
