Purple Ribbons for Everyone

As River listeners know, we are strong supporters of the Women’s and Children’s Alliance in Boise. We dedicate the fundraising at Concert for Cause to the WCA each year. I toured the center in Downtown Boise last week for an inside look. It was sobering. And hopeful.

The need to help domestic abuse and sexual assault victims is great. I listened to a recording of a 911 call made by a hysterical six-year old girl, as her father was hurting her mother and baby brother. A situation that ended with the arrest of the father and lives turned around with WCA assistance. The WCA helped the family escape the violence and set the mother on a path of self-sufficiency that has made her confident enough to share that recorded call from years ago.

The WCA rescues, heals and sets people free.

Director Bea Black shared an insight about the prevalence of domestic abuse and sexual assault. She says you see pink ribbons everywhere for breast cancer awareness. Yet, a woman is more likely to experience domestic abuse or sexual assault than breast cancer.

Wear a purple ribbon to show support for domestic abuse and sexual assault education and prevention. Lapel ribbons are available for free at the WCA, or make your own. Here’s a link to how-to video, featuring a pink ribbon.

Volunteers are always needed. Donations are always needed. Ambassadors are always needed.

Got gently used clothing and/or household items in the garage? The WCA uses the items for clients and to stock their thrift shop, which generates a lot of funding. And do some shopping while you’re there. The Shop at WCA is on the lower level at the headquarters, 720 W. Washington, Boise. It’s one of my favorite thrift boutiques. Open M-F, 9:30-5:30.
