Here are MOST of the foodie notes from my River Morning reports this week, 10-28 to 11-1.
The biggie of the week, of course.
Available Sunday. Let’s never talk about that chicken sandwich again. OK?
Using online reviews, Delish.com has chosen the “Chili Everyone is Talking About in Your State.” Goodwood Barbecue Company won for their traditional all meat-no beans chili. My tip is not to overlook the jalapeno cornbread muffins with honey butter served as a side. You can get that sweet treat even if you don’t order the chili. Just ask and they’ll bring some to the table.
Other local food notes.
Kopper Kitchen out by the Airport is back to serving beer, wine and mixed drinks. They were dry for a while during an ownership transition.
Andrade’s is breaking ground to build a new restaurant, not far from the current location on Overland Road. Michael Deeds at the Idaho Statesman has details.
Another Starbucks for Boise. A restaurant and drive-through on Fairview between Five Mile and Clovedale. BoiseDev.com says that will bring the Boise Starbucks total to 47.
The Idaho Foodbank has been supporting the community for 35 years. The milestone was marked with a proclamation from the governor.
National brands are keeping busy.
Nestle Brand refrigerated cookie dough for Christmas. Pinch of Grinch. Green sugar cookies with a little heart-shaped candy for the top of each cookie
A & W has jumped into the food stunt game. Sriracha Cheese Curds. They look like spicy deep-fried mini mozzarella sticks.
There’s an online petition to try to convince the Kellogg’s company to go back to the old recipe for Rice Krispies Treats cereal. Confession: I didn’t know there was a new recipe. 3,599 signatures when I typed this up.
Pepperidge Farm Christmas cookies this year are shortbread spiced with cinnamon with an image of a toy soldier on them . It’s a salute to the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular.
Halloween may be behind us, but candy corn season is not over. Brach’s is selling a Christmas corn mix. The candy corn is peppermint-y and the chocolate pieces are like Crunch candy bars.
Brach’s also added a set of mystery candy canes to the holiday lineup. Three different flavors in each box. Flavors might be fruity, sour, sweet or salty.
Cheetos asteroids. They look just like cheese balls, but they’re really small. It looks like you could eat them with a spoon.
Frito-Lay has launched the Tasty Rewards program. Sign up online. There’s a $15,000 sweepstakes, coupons and hopefully, free product.
Walkers Potato Chips in the UK has special packaging for the holidays, Mariah Carey’s photo. She was paid millions for the campaign.
At Trader Joe’s – kettle-cooked turkey and stuffing flavored potato chips. Might be a nice companion for the Pringles Roasted Turkey crisps
Happy birthday to the McDonald’s Happy Meal. It’s been around for 40 years. They are bringing back some of the retro toys, like Hello Kitty and Beanie Babies.
In that ad above from 1997, a Happy Meal was $1.99 and came with a small order of French fries. Those were the days!
And happy 10th birthday to the last McDonald’s hamburger and fries served in Iceland. Relics from when the only McDonald’s in that country closed. They look pretty much the same, except some fries are missing because someone decided to try to eat a few, years after the meal was saved. You can watch the historic food on a 24/7 webcam here.
Cheers, Debbie
