Sweet moment in the studio

walking iris

My walking iris plant that lives in the 94.9 studio bloomed this morning at 6:45 a.m. It’s a surprise. This plant normally blooms once a year around Easter. Here’s how it happened:

The flower smells wonderful. Not a standard iris scent. It reminds me of a cherry blossom. The bloom will wilt quickly, and then a plantlet sprouts. As it grows, the stem will bend towards the ground. That’s why it gets its “walking” name. Where it touches the ground, roots dig in. Walking iris is a houseplant in our growing zone. It can’t survive freezing temperatures.

Here’s a plantlet from a flower this spring. It’s ready to be on its own. There are two of these that I will put in pots this weekend. Want a plant? let me know.
