Cool Flower Alert: Sea Holly

A happy bee visiting the sea holly, Eryngium, in my garden. It’s perennial, easy to grow from seed and, despite its watery name, prefers conditions on the dry side.

It reaches between two and three feet tall to add height to garden beds. Those petals surrounding the cone of tiny flowers are just as poky as they appear to be. Sea holly is available in a spectrum of blues and purples with silvery accents. Blooms all summer and the cut flowers are long-lasting.

The hue changes in different light conditions. A spray I clipped last night looks deep purple in the studio on a cloudy day.
