Tomato Planting Time

I sometimes wait until June 1st to put my baby tomato plants in the ground. The reason isn’t risk of frost, it’s soil temperature. Tomatoes like their toes to be warm, between 60 and 65 degrees. Grab a kitchen thermometer and check your soil temperature.

The babies are so small.

The pipe cleaners on the tomato cage will be useful to keep the vines in line later.

By September, these sun gold tomatoes will spill over the top of the 7-foot tall structures. Here’s what they looked like in 2017.

Haven’t planted tomatoes yet? No problem. The first week of June still provides plenty of ideal growing season.
