Time to Put Up Hummingbird Feeders

Hummingbirds that fly south for the winter are back. Some of them. The rest will arrive soon. Dust off hummingbird feeders, pick one up a store and start putting out snacks for them.

I choose feeders based on how easy it is to take them apart and clean them, because they have to be cleaned at least once a week. More often when the weather is hot. No need to purchase packets of “hummingbird nectar.” The recipe is simple; 1 part white sugar, 4 parts water. Stir to dissolve. Do not add food coloring. Hummingbirds are smart and can find food without food coloring. The artificial color may not best for their health, either.

Hang the feeder up and they will come. Increase your chances by placing feeders near trees so they have safe perching spots.

Buy several feeders and hang them in spots that are not line-of-sight with each other. Hummingbirds can be territorial, so offering more than one feeding station helps minimize conflicts.

Let me know when you see your first hummer.
