Here’s an idea for 2019 – ignore your email

I read an article this week that made the case for ignoring your email. It’s called Inbox Infinity. You accept that you can never address every email, so you just let them stack up and accept that it’s OK.

I like it!

That little red number on my phone that nags at me becomes a badge of honor. The higher it goes, well, who cares? On December 31st, I spent two hours deleting, deleting, deleting, to get the number to under 500. Then today…

“Inbox zero” has been touted as a practice of efficient and successful people. They stay on top of emails. This is no longer possible in my life. I’m sure you’re like me. We all have several email addresses to monitor. In a discussion of this topic in the article and on Twitter, I like these thoughts.

  • “Letting go of the false need to respond to every email. YOU control your day & your priorities. Email is reactive to others”
  • “…if you respond quickly, you have a reputation for being responsive, people send you more messages, and it kind of feeds on itself”
  • “…publicly admit that you have too much email to handle and be up front about not responding” *This can be followed up with alerting family & friends, bosses and key clients of alternate methods of reaching you, such as messaging apps.

Who’s with me? Email and let me know.
