Japan Day on the Basque Block

The Idaho Japanese Association hosts Japan Day every year on Labor Day on the Basque Block. Free to attend, with entertainment, food trucks, a yard sale table, games for kiddos, and crafts. The cats in the photo above are part origami, part sculpture.

New this year were representatives from the Minidoka National Historic Site. There are generations who haven’t heard the story of prison camps for Japanese citizens.

Each fan was hand-painted and the characters referred to the event and anime. My daughter, who is a third-year Japanese student, could read some of them.

Butterfly brooches made from fabric and wire. A Japanese craft called tsumami zaiku that dates to the Edo period.

Taiko drumming inside the Basque Center. There was also traditional Japanese dancing.
