Nickel Creek 2014

Nickel Creek 2014

This was a magical summer day for me at the Idaho Botanical Garden. I’d gotten permission to do an interview an session with Nickel Creek in the Cottage Room. I was solo this day, and brought as much as I could in one trip. I set up recording equipment, mics, and a camera. I wasn’t sure how many people would play. When I saw we had 4, I found another small camera. Sarah Watkins grinned just a big as she saw me covertly attaching it to my boom stand with duct tape.

They wanted to use just their one bluegrass mic, I asked if we could at least put the bass in an individual channel. They agreed, but emphasized they didn’t want to do a session if I was going to add an ounce of reverb to it. I assured them I’d keep it raw, so that’s what you get here. They sound amazing, such a tight group!

This is a “Mother Mother” cover.

The Cottage Room is one of my favorite places to grab sessions and interviews, if there’s not a sound check on the main stage. We also have sessions there with Brandi Carilile, and Josh Ritter!

If you’re not familiar with this group, Shawn and Sarah Watkins are siblings. Other projects include Watkins Family Hour. They all have solo releases, and Chris Thile often appears with Punch Brothers.
